Microsoft Operations Framework (MOF) Boosts Web Availability on Microsoft.com
Microsoft.com is a large Web site by any standards. As the Internet corporate home page for one of the largest software companies in the world, it manages 3 million files and more than 500 content providers, clearly a demanding content-management challenge. Just keeping the site up and running on a round-the-clock basis can be challenging. Maintaining a high level of availability is even more difficult. When site managers evaluated how they were doing about 18 months ago (early 2001), they didn’t like everything they saw. Overall, their availability was high, but not consistently. Of even more concern, they couldn’t quantify why their service was good some of the time and not so good at other times. They asked a Microsoft-led team to conduct an operations assessment to compare Microsoft.com processes against the Microsoft Operations Framework (MOF), a known Microsoft extension of industry-accepted best practices for information technology (IT), and to make recommendations for optimization. Microsoft.com has since implemented many of those recommendations, and is now realizing its vision of achieving the highest availability while showcasing Microsoft technologies.

Of even more concern, they couldn’t quantify why their service was good some of the time and not so good at other times.
Solution A Microsoft-led team conducted an operations assessment based on the Microsoft Operations Framework (MOF). Microsoft.com is now implementing many of the recommendations developed in that process.
